alien species The red alga Antithamnionella spirographidis originates from the north of the Pacific region. This alga ended up in Europe (and spread further) by clinging to ships and through transport with oysters. The first Belgian observation for this species dates from 1992, in the harbour of Ostend, although there would have been populations present from 1983 onwards in Zeebrugge. The success of this red alga is due to its fast reproduction. It is a fouling species, which causes problems by attaching to hulls and ropes. [details]
